Popular Science Lecture on “Earth’s Water, the previous day” in Gujarat Science City

Popular Science Lecture on
“Earth’s Water, the previous day”
Friday, 24th September 2010: 10.30 to 11.30 hrs, Auditorium I in Gujarat Science City

The Gujarat Science City (GSC) is announcing the popular science lecture on the topic “Earth’s Water, the previous day” to be delivered by Dr. V. Rajamani, Professor, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on 24th September 2010 at 10.30 am in Auditorium I.

The lecture is a part of the popular science lecture series titled as SCIENCE MATTERS that aims to bring awareness among the young students, parents, teachers and the media persons about the fascinating world of basic sciences and its promising future. The series deals with topics on frontier areas of science and technology for the spreading of new knowledge and awareness among the students as well as the public at large.

Water is the most common liquid on our planet, vital to all life forms. Water is recycled through the water cycle. It evaporates from the oceans, forms clouds, it rains (or snows), the rivers return the water to the ocean.  The longest timescale of water anywhere in the cycle is in the deep ocean and in deep ground water.  However, water is very slowly destroyed chemically in photosynthesis and recovered again in respiration. We drink the same water today that the dinosaurs drank when they were alive 65 million years ago. As we are celebrating the year 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, it is very important to understand the precious resources of the planet Earth.
Prof. Rajamani (born 1946) is an eminent geologist by profession and very closely worked on integrated geological research in the country since his joining in JNU in 1977. Prior to this, Prof. Rajamani worked in State University of New York, University of Toronto and worked specifically on experimental modeling and geochemistry of various rocks. The possible geological and ecological consequences of the proposed interlinking of Indian Rivers were brought to the knowledge of general public and scientists by his research articles.
The Mineralogical Society of America and Geological Society of India conferred awards and recognitions to Prof. Rajamani for his significant and pioneering work. He has also been elected as Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and the Indian National Science Academy, Delhi.
GSC, working under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt of Gujarat sets a challenge to young minds to the wonder world of science and to find new answers and innovations with scientific temperament and career.
The popular science lecture has been organized in association with the Indian National Science Academy, Physical Research Laboratory and Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG).
The programme will discuss the most available compound on our planet and how water is something we should cherish, value, and respect; for without it, we would be no more.
We invite one and all to attend the programme at Auditorium I in the Science City.
With best regards.

Yours sincerely.
